Whether you are just expecting your first baby or just moved to the Salt lake City area, finding the right pediatrician for your family can be difficult. A pediatrician will be involved in your child’s journey for years. It is important to find a doctor that you can trust. Always follow your mamas instinct. Here are 4 tips on how to find the right pediatrician.

When to start looking for a pediatrician:

I started looking for my baby’s pediatrician at the end of the second trimeter. It is a good idea to start looking around this time or before baby is born so that you have time to visit the office and check with your insurance. Most pediatricians offices have a time for expectant parents and new patients to visit and tour the office. This is a great time to ask questions, meet the providers, nurses, clinical, front desk staff and have an idea of the office environment. Doctors aren’t the only ones in a pediatrics office who care for your little ones. Nurse practitioners (NPs) also see children. They have special training in pediatrics. You will be here a lot, so you want a place that you feel safe, comfortable, and knowing that you can trust all your providers.

How do you find a Pediatrician:

Asking other moms, friends, your prenatal care provider for referrals, searching in your insurance medical network website, or searching on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) which is also a great app to have.

Some things to Consider: Convenience, Availability and Insurance Coverage :

These three are very important because your baby will have checkup appointments frequently during the first year, about 7 times in one year for well visit checkups. You will want to find the pediatrician availability and how soon you will get an appointment if baby is sick. Office hours are important, I love when pediatricians have evening walk-in or weekend hours for sick children. Most pediatrician have on-call service if your baby is really sick during the night and you are not sure whether or not to go to the emergency room. They will ask you a few questions to help you decide the right thing to do. You will also want to make sure that your pediatrician accepts your insurance and you can find this on your insurance website or calling the pediatricians office with your insurance card information. It will be a good idea to check with your insurance what is covered at 100% and what is not.

Before scheduling an appointment, do a little internet research:

Many pediatricians have their own practice websites. You can learn about the providers before making an appointment. Some things you can find online: The doctor’s medical background, training, board certifications, experience, office hours, policy, location, and languages spoken.
